HUMP-HOP WEDNESDAY - WU TANG CLAN

Get through you’re hump day with some Hip-Hop.

Wu Tang

We all know the WU TANG CLAN ain’t nothing to fuck wit. And why would you when the clan roll 9 deep? Pretty much all of the dudes will be making their way to AUSTRALIA excluding RZA, who is apparently working on a Kung-Fu movie with our boy RUSSEL CROWE, and OL’ DIRTY BASTARD who died of a drug overdose back in 2004 (Cocaine/ prescription synthetic opiate Tramadol).

So that leaves GZA, METHOD MAN, RAEKWON, GHOSTFACE KILLAH, U-GOD, INSPECTAH DECK, MASTA KILLA as well as DJ’s ALLAH MATHEMATICS and STREETLIFE to protect ya neck, and joining the posse will be ODB’s son YOUNG DIRTY and yeah, he looks heaps like his Pa.

Ol' Dirty

Young Dirty

The guys will be here early August playing 2 shows at the ENMORE THEATRE in SYDNEY (4th and 5th) MELBOURNE’s FESTIVAL HALL on the 6th and way out west in PERTH on the 7th.

Check out the latest release from RAEKWON, SHAOLIN VS. WU TANG released early March, here’s the title track from the album. This clip is one of the best I’ve seen in quite a while, you’ve got ninjas, a bit of bling, and more ninjas.

HUMP-HOP WEDNESDAY - TRAVIS BARKER/THE COOL KIDS

Get through you’re hump day with some Hip-Hop.

Blink 182

Remember BLINK 182? The late 90’s/early 2000’s bubble gum punk band that dominated the charts with their catchy three minute teenage anthems laced with tongue in cheek toilet humour? A producers wet dream for the lucrative tween market even before it was known as the lucrative tween market? I certainly do. These guys called it a day back in 2004, and a couple of years ago decided it was the right time to get back to it!

BLINK 182 have had an album in the works for the past 2 years but delays have pushed the record release date to September 2011.

Anyway, I didn’t really want to talk about BLINK 182 today (maybe some other time), instead I was more interested in their drummer TRAVIS BARKER, the skinny guy with the tattoos who didn’t talk as much as the other two.

Travis Barker
Well he’s been quite busy since BLINK 182 called it a day. He’s played in other bands – BOX CAR RACER, played live with a DJ – TRV$DJAM (DJAM was a dude from the band CRAZY TOWN that had the number 1 mega smash hit BUTTERFLY back in 2001, he passed away in 2009 after overdosing on drugs), started a record label LASALLE RECORDS as well as release a solo album earlier this year titled GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME. The album has a heavy Hip Hop slant to it and features an army of collaborators: LIL’ WAYNE, PHARELL WILLIAMS, LUPE FIASCO, RZA, RAEKWON, TOM MORELLO, SNOOP DOGG, LUDACRIS, BUSTA RHYMES, LIL’ JON, SLASH, KID CUDI, TECH N9NE, CYPRIS HILL, and STEVE AOKI. Quite the list. I wanted to give you a peak at one of the tracks from the album that he did with the CHICAGO/DETRIOT hip hop duo THE COOL KIDS.

Sir Michael Rocks + Chuck Inglish

THE COOL KIDS have their debut studio album due out July 2011 titled WHEN FISH RIDE BICYCLES, Quite an unusual name for a hip hop album, but not so unusual when you look back at the mix tapes that THE COOL KIDS have released including GONE FISHING and TACKLE BOX. These guys are either really into their aquatic life/sports or fish and fishing are being used as some sort of euphemism. TRAVIS BARKER returned the favour and features on a track for WHEN FISH RIDE BICYCLES, whilst other notable collaborators include MAYER HAWTHORNE and GHOSTFACE KILLAH.

Check out the complete lack of budget/effort put into the clip for the track off TRAVIS BARKERs debut LP GIVE THE DRUMMER SOME featuring THE COOL KIDSJUMP DOWN. There is a dump truck, and some shitty looking cars in it.

HUMP-HOP WEDNESDAY - PHAROAHE MONCH

Get through you’re hump day with some Hip-Hop.

One Hectic Monster Chomping a Train

HUMP-HOP WEDNESDAY brings you an anthem from back in ’99.
A song so awesome that it caused the whole album from being distributed…well, not really, it was actually the use of an un-cleared sample from AKIRA IFUKUBE’s GOJIRA TAI MOSURA – the theme song for the original GODZILLA made back in 1954, that made the album redundant. Such a silly move on the part of both parties. Surely they could have reached some sort of an agreement monetary wise.

I don’t know much about much, but surely the song promotes AKIRA IFUKUBE’s work. It would get people interested in the Japanese composers other works, promote the sale of the original GODZILLA soundtrack as well as be an avenue for future revenue if both parties were able to sought out some sort of agreement. But AKIRA IFUKUBE and his estate are not the only people to blame.

Mr. Monch
Why would PHAROAHE MONCH think it would be possible to rip a sample so blatantly obvious, with little change, and turn it into a track that turned out to be as successful as it was without causing a disturbance amongst the IFUKUBE camp. But maybe that is the key… Mr. Monch didn’t realise the success SIMON SAYS would bring. Check out the GODZILLA theme below.

This situation is definitely not a first or last to occur in the music industry. The ROLLING STONES and THE VERVE spring to mind, but that is another story, and I’m sure there are many more.

Anyway, that aside, PHAROAHE MONCH would go on to work with TALIB KWALI, RZA, EMINEM, ROB SWIFT, XZBIT, KENNY ROGERS, WYCLEF JEAN, DE LA SOUL, NATE DOGG, LINKIN PARK, MOS DEF, MACY GRAY, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, WIL.I.AM, JAY-Z, AMY WINEHOUSE, DJ PREMIER, THE BLACK KEYS and AUSTRALIA’s own HILLTOP HOODS.

He also appeared on movie soundtracks NEXT FRIDAY, TRAINGING DAY, CHARLIES ANGELS and BOILER ROOM…Wow…what a bastard. Check out SIMON SAYS below and GET THE FUCK UP!

HUMP-HOP WEDNESDAY - OFWGKTA

Get through you’re hump day with some Hip-Hop!

If you enjoy following artists that are blowing up faster than baby Jesus at a southern Christian revival camp then you would already be familiar with Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All(OFWGKTA), and in particular Tyler the Creator.

The 20 year old wordsmith from Cali has exploded into the world of hip hop leaving the old guard scratching their heads and picking brain splats off their much loved bling.

Not that Tyler is above the whole bling thang himself as you can see in his clip below for YONKERS where he sports enough of the stuff to start his own chain gang as well as cause severe posture issues.

He's played the MTV music awards, performed with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon and over the next three (sold out) nights Odd Future will be tearing holes in the lit up sails of SYDNEY'S Opera Heezy(that's my hip-hop slang for house).

His album GOBLIN dropped a couple of weeks back. Tyler is at his best when he's at his darkest. And simplest. His obsession with bitches and fellatio creates a downturn in the album that holds a lot of gems: GOBLINZONKERS, RADICALS, TRON CAT, and GOLDEN plus bonus track BURGER

Dark and clever the album is less Marquis de Sade and more EMINEM, which I'm sure he would hate - It's kind of like a whole album of GUILTY CONSCIENCE.

The kids will eat this shit up for breakfast and he's going to be a huge force in Hip-Hop for many years no doubt. I hope he can maintain his rage as he comes out of his youth. If so his lyrics will be phenomenal...

Check out the clip to YONKERS...Oh yeah...and he is a fuckin' Unicorn.
