A day marked by regret and depression – the worse it is, the better the night before was.
Within and Without |
WASHED OUT’s debut LP will drop next month (12th July 2011). Part of the so-called CHILL WAVE movement, this bloke came up fast through various blog posts and word of mouth, a true artist of the internet age.
After falling for FEEL IT ALL AROUND, off the LIFE OF LEISURE EP released back in 2009, I rushed to get tickets to WASHED OUT aka ERNEST GREENE’s SYDNEY SHOW a few months ago…and I was a little disappointed. I’m not sure what I expected, but I found the whole live show a little lacklustre. When you hear this kind of music you probably shouldn’t expect a great deal out of the live show that goes with it, but I was a bit disappointed to find that I had no problem ordering drinks from the bar or going to the bathroom without worrying about missing anything.
The music sounded exactly the same as it did recorded which is usually a good thing, but for this I think they should have changed it up, added some more drum lines, changed tempo, jammed on stage…done something to make it a little more interesting.
That put aside, this is the perfect kind of music to enjoy your HUNG SUNDAY. Taking it’s tone from sunny afternoons on unnamed beaches, sipping ice cold alcoholic beverages with friends, and revelling in the quiet moments between conversation, the album is an easy listen that perhaps lacks a little depth. If only he could borrow a few drum tracks off friend TORO Y MOI to spice things up just a little.
That being said this album would be perfect as the soundtrack for catching up with friends, or something to listen to as you drift to the land of nod.
WASHED OUT’s debut album WITHIN AND WITHOUT, title taken from GEORGE MACDONALD’s book length poem WITHIN AND WITHOUT first published in 1855, will be out next month, so to give you a taste here’s track two off the album ECHOES.
